My Story
At IFF, we’re proud to support Single Homeless Project (SHP) as our charity partner this year - an organisation that works tirelessly to prevent homelessness and help Londoners rebuild their lives. Their mission resonates strongly with me on a personal level. That’s why I’ve signed up for the CEO Sleepout: to raise vital funds for the important work they do.
In my younger days, I found myself in precarious situations – particularly when living outside the UK. Ater a period of sofa-surfing when I first arrived in Paris, I ended up in a Foyer de Jeunes Travailleurs – effectively a hostel for young (mostly migrant) workers. That experience left a real mark on me.
Closer to home, I’ve also seen family and friends in vulnerable housing situations. Growing up on a council estate, I became very aware of the realities of housing inequality, and it’s something I’ve carried with me ever since.
More recently, I heard an interview with Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, who shared her own experience of homelessness and how she rebuilt her life. Her story really moved me, and reminded me how many people’s lives are shaped by circumstances they didn’t choose.
Taking part in the CEO Sleepout feels daunting - as the nights turn colder, I can’t help but think of the thousands of people who face that reality every night. I know this event is in a safe environment, and it’s only one night, so in many ways it feels like ‘cheating’. But even in the lead-up, it’s already made me reflect more deeply on the resilience it must take to survive sleeping rough for long periods of time.
Every donation really will make a difference to the lives of people experiencing, or at risk from, homelessness - thank you for your support.
