My Story

Hello,

I am Katy Longhurst, after enduring 169 traumatic experiences of coercive and violent behaviour at home, I now consider myself a Domestic Abuse Escapist. I thought I was alone, now I know I am not. 1 in 4 women are victims of Domestic Abuse.

This has inspired me to help others get their lives back - so I have created ‘Joan’ - a tool that discreetly signals for help using patterns from everyday appliances like kettles and toasters. It’s a lifeline for victims who can’t easily access emergency services due to control or surveillance.

You can read my story here: New app allows domestic abuse victims to get help secretly via a kettle or toaster | The Standard

So I’ll be joining other leaders in the community for a CEO Sleepout to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the Oasis Domestic Abuse Service. This organisation is doing incredible work, providing vital support and resources for survivors of domestic abuse—a cause that’s close to my heart.

The impact of domestic abuse is devastating, affecting not only the immediate safety and well-being of survivors but also their long-term mental and physical health. It’s a cycle of fear and isolation that can be incredibly hard to break without the right support. That’s why I’m stepping out of my comfort zone for one night—to stand in solidarity with those who have experienced the harsh realities of domestic abuse.

By taking part in this event, I hope to help shine a light on this critical issue and raise funds that will go directly towards life-saving services like safe accommodation, counseling, and legal assistance.

If you’re able to contribute, please consider donating to my fundraiser. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference and help Oasis continue their invaluable work.

Let’s come together to support survivors and help them find safety, stability, and hope for a better future.

Let’s keep moving forward, one step at a time.
